This body of work explores optical resonances by manipulating colour and tone in order to delay the perception of painterly space. The title of the show, “Temperature Inversion”, in one sense refers to colour pushing and pulling for optical affect. It is also a term for a natural phenomenon in which the higher one travels, the warmer it gets – a reverse of the natural order of things. The inversion contains heat in a layer and often results in the trapping of particles creating a hazy atmosphere. The illusion of dense atmosphere contrasts with oil impasto and flat graphic forms via collage-like construction rupturing the deep vista of the traditional landscape painting. Lastly, these works continue to explore the motif of the tree house, implying provisional architecture in a space between a backyard, a recreational campouts or a survivalist shelter.
